Tantrum Tracker 4.0: rebuilding a 2013 app
What it takes to rebuild software people have relied on for over a decade, without losing what made it work.
Tantrum Tracker has been on the App Store since 2013. In software years, that is not old. It is practically geological.
The app was built for the iPhone of its era, in the tools of its era. It still worked. People still used it: parents, caregivers, and the teachers and therapists they shared records with. But “still works” is a low bar, and the gap between what the app was and what a modern iPhone could do had become impossible to ignore. And there was a second gap, harder to ignore still: Android families had been asking for the app for years, and we did not have it for them.
So version 4.0 is not an update. It is a rebuild, and (for the first time) it ships on Android too.
Starting over, carefully
Rebuilding software that people depend on is a particular kind of nerve-wracking. The old app held real records about real families. Whatever replaced it had to be unmistakably better (faster, clearer, calmer) while staying familiar enough that a returning user would not feel lost.
The new Tantrum Tracker is built on React Native and Expo. It runs on iPhone and (for the first time) Android. Logging an incident (the thing you do most) now takes seconds. The charts that surface patterns were redrawn from scratch. Support Circle means everyone who helps can work from the same picture. On iPhone, the rebuild also adds an Apple Watch app for logging from the wrist and a Home Screen widget for one-tap quick logging.
What did not change
The purpose of the app did not change. Tantrum Tracker helps families see what is going on. It is an informational tool, not a clinical one, and it never pretended otherwise. The rebuild kept that focus and simply made the day-to-day of it lighter.
You can read more on the app’s own page. Version 4 has not shipped yet — the original app came off sale in 2026 while the rebuild is finished, and the new one arrives on iPhone and Android soon.
